The film casts Lennon as a petulant, unbearable teen who makes bedroom eyes at everyone, including his dueling maternal figures. Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) vaguely resembles the person he's portraying, but I found his physical girth distracting. It's completely within the realm of possibility that young John Lennon had big ol' beefy arms, but it's just not the iconic gangle that I want to see. This is especially confusing because Johnson was appropriately weinerly in Kick-Ass. Yes, I just said “weinerly” and I'm not taking it back.

Instead of being strictly a biopic about Lennon's young life and the birth of his rock-and-roll spirit, Nowhere Boy commits most of its runtime to filling out the fascinating (?) backstory of his relationships with his aunt and mother. He lives with his aunt, who serves as his guardian, and is re-connecting with his mother, who has been conspicuously absent for much of his life. This is really hokey drama stuff, most of which rarely elevates itself above “TV Movie” status. There's lots of yelling and crying and angst, and at the end of the picture I felt that I had learned a lot about John Lennon, but almost none of it has enriched my view of his music. The film does depict his early days as a musician and first meetings with members of the future Beatles, but it amounts to little more than a bit of fan service.

Taylor-Wood's directing is functional, but lacking in personality. Outside of a fetching (but short) dream sequence near the beginning, there's nary a memorable image in sight. I hope to see the director live up to the potential of her short in the future, because Nowhere Boy feels like a rather by-the-book, no-frills affair. Nothing it does with the form impresses, namely because one doesn't get the sense that t's attempting to.

The film ends with a montage of moments from Lennon's life, including many of the characters and locales depicted in the film. This adds a much-needed level of gravitas to the proceedings, especially because one sees that the (dull, drab) settings and furnishings are actually painstakingly recreated from these photos. This is impressive and admirable, but unfortunately I'd mostly lost interest by that point. Nowhere Boy is a film for a very specific kind of Beatles fan: the kind who wants to know everything they can about John Lennon's young development. It's not as good as watching someone masturbate in a desert for eight minutes, but at least it's miles better than Across the Universe

6.20 – Okay. 6s are just okay. These movies usually have many flaws, didn’t try to do anything special, or were poorly executed. Some will still love 6s, but most prefer to just rent them. Watch more trailers and read more reviews before you decide.

Misleadingly billed as a John Lennon biopic, Nowhere Boy would be more accurately titled “The Untold Story of John Lennon's Mother and Aunt”. If that sounds interesting to you, then have at it.
