Last night, a rumor broke from outlet Super Bro Movies that Rian Johnson was no longer producing his own Star Wars Trilogy. Seeing as how the project was announced a few years back with little news in the interim, people began to see the rumor as truth. Not wanting to confuse people any further, Johnson took to Twitter to clear the air.
After being linked the story by a fan, Johnson wrote, “No it isn’t true, I’m still working on the trilogy. With all due respect to the movie bros, who I’m sure are lovely kind bros with good fraternal intentions.” The original story has since been deleted, but the linked post from Screen Rant remains.
Superbro Movies quickly issued an apology for the story and clarified its stance in a Tweet. Johnson, ever the affable man, responded by saying, “No harm no foul at all guys, thanks. I think the rumor game makes fandom funner.”
I’m gonna come out with an apparently controversial opinion and say that I enjoyed The Last Jedi. It wasn’t a perfect film, but it upheld the Star Wars legacy while adding a touch of surprise and subversion to every scene. It constantly kept the viewer guessing what was next, which is something most modern blockbusters can’t even dream of doing. It was also a fairly deep look at hero worship and how tradition occasionally needs to be changed up.
Maybe it shouldn’t be the groundwork for the series moving forward, but no franchise should become formulaic over time. Star Wars started off by cribbing ideas from other media and adding a new twist to them and that is what the series should continue to do. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
