Whether you want it to be true or not, Twilight star Robert Pattinson is now officially going to portray Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming film The Batman. Warner Bros. closed the deal and announced the news today that Pattinson will be donning the cape and cowl and making a weird grunting voice at criminals in a few years. The film, which is to be directed by Matt Reeves, will be hitting theaters on June 25, 2021.
According to a report from Variety, pre-production on the film is expected to begin this summer. While no specific date has been picked, it won’t be long before Pattinson steps into the Batcave and becomes the bat. In addition to Reeves’ direction, The Batman will be produced by Reeves with his longtime collaborator Dylan Clark (the two previously worked together on the recent Planet of the Apes films).
While it might be easy to make jokes about Pattinson for his turn in the Twilight saga, the actor has gone on to do some great work in the years since. He may not have starred in any films that the average moviegoer will know, but he’s chosen a path that has led to some creative films. Maybe they aren’t always “good,” but you can’t fault him for shying away from the typical Hollywood route of being a typecasted actor. He’s proven himself to be capable of a variety of roles, so I have no doubt he’ll be able to pull off the Bruce Wayne side of the iconic character. Whether or not he can be Batman remains to be seen.
