Look, we can go on and on ad nauseum about how there is no way in hell a Robocop remake is going to be anywhere near as good as the original, but what’s the point? The simple fact is, the more Robocop in our lives the better. Robocop 3 being a world destroying paradox by being both awesome and not awesome at the same time proves this. So let us rejoice in the news that the new Robocop, reborn from post bankruptcy MGM, almost has a director in the form of Jose Padilha.
MGM is currently in talks with the director to helm the film. If you haven’t heard his name it is probably because his smash hit films Elite Squad and Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within weren’t really big hits in the U.S., but the Portuguese film tore apart the Brazilian box office. I have not seen either, so I can’t judge his skill, but if you have let us know.
I can’t help but think that this is a step down from Darren Aronofsky, who was helming the picture before MGM did that whole bankrupt thing, but that is only because almost any director in the world is a step down from Aronosfky. I have faith that no man can screw Robocop up enough to make it unwatchable.
