Rumor: Zack Snyder developing samurai style Star Wars

Because of the amount of confusing hubub surrounding this news, we’ll be placing it in the rumor category until its completely settled one way or the other. It all started with a story on Vulture this morning that stated Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) was developing an action film set in the Star Wars universe, but it was not part of the new trilogy.

The most interesting fact of the Vulture story was that the new film’s story would be based on Seven Samurai (or even The Magnificent Seven for that matter), which of course means it could have been badass. The reason all of this sound ridiculous because it might just all be a rumor.

Later on in the day, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Snyder’s reps have completely shot down Vulture’s claims:

While he is super-flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.

While the cynic in me wants to say “well of course they denied it,” the fan part of me wants this to be a little true. At least some of it seems feasible. For one, directors don’t seem eager to take on Star Wars VII, so we might end up with someone dubious like Snyder. And two, the story may not be great, but the whole thing will damn sure look awesome. So, I guess I’ll hope to hear more about this “Star Wars Samurai” project in the future because, c’mon. It’ll be freakin’ Jedi samurais. That’s awesome.
