Though plans are wont to go awry amidst the global pandemic, Hollywood continues to set its sights on the long game, with news today of Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi film adapting the upcoming novel of the same name by Andy Weir, author of The Martian.
Attached to lead the film as well as produce is Ryan Gosling, who was last seen on the big screen playing Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s First Man. Details on Weir’s novel are spare, with the premise described as a “solitary tale of an astronaut on a space ship who is tasked with saving the planet.” How positively vague!
With the novel arriving in Spring of 2021 via Random House one would think we have a long ways to go for the film, though MGM, the acquiring studio, is already in production. No director is set.
Andy Weir’s follow-up book to The Martian, Artemis, is also receiving a film adaptation courtesy of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, most recently of Spider-Verse fame.
