For some reason, the critical world did not keen to well to Netflix’s Friends From College, with complaints about unlikable characters and an affair plot turning folks off from the show. That, however, is exactly why I liked it so much so it’s with great trepidation that I watched the first trailer for the second season, which reportedly will ditch the entire affair storyline after jumping one year into the future.
Luckily, it doesn’t look like they’re ditching the affair completely like it never happened but instead focussing on the fallout of the event. I will admit that everyone seems a little bit nicer and happier this time around, which is something the show’s creators, Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, said they were going to work on. I don’t know if that’s a good thing. The honesty and messiness of the first season are what made the show stand out and actually be funnier. Just because I didn’t like the characters doesn’t mean I didn’t like the show. It felt more real because of it.
Still, the unique humor that the stellar cast creates is there so I’ll be tuning in for the second season when it lands on Netflix on January 11.
