After a slew of masterpiece hour-long animated films and a pair of terrifying live-action features, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is getting a modern update in Scoob!, the new animated film coming next year. The trailer’s got the pop music to vouch for it.
With the titular crime-solving mutt (Frank Welker, who provided the original voice of Fred) and his pal Shaggy (Will Forte) at the center of the film, Scoob! looks to chronicle the founding of the Mystery Gang, with Daphne (Amanda Seyfried), Velma (Gina Rodriguez), and Fred (Zac Efron) all present and accounted for. Fred seems to have lost the ascot, though.
As per Warner Bros’ official description, the Gang eventually come to “face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global “dogpocalypse,” the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined.”
With a cast rounded out by Mark Wahlberg, Tracy Morgan, Kiersey Clemons, and Ken Jeong, among others, Scoob! certainly packs a talented troupe of voices. It’s difficult for me to divorce the characters from the performances I know and cherish from the existing cartoons, but time will tell whether the new cast can cut the mustard.
Scoob! releases May 15, 2020.
