At this point, I’m pretty damn tired of the whole MCU. Still, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings speaks to me on an almost spiritual level. Disney financially backing what could be an epic Kung Fu movie just sounds great. What’s even better is the casting for this Chinese-themed Marvel film, which includes some classic Hong Kong action stars.

As you can see from the image above, both Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung will be featured in Shang-Chi. I love that. I’m also super partial to Awkwafina being here, but she hasn’t been in a Hong Kong action film…yet.
Really, the whole cast here is great. I’m happy that Marvel went with a mostly Asian cast for this, similar to Black Panther and its representation of Black and African actors. While I don’t mean to beat the dead horse that is Iron Fist, I do believe that series would have turned out better had Marvel deviated from its source material and changed the ethnicity of the lead. Maybe it’s stereotypical to say an Asian should know martial arts by default, but it would have been a solid reimagining of the character if they could have included some Chinese ancestry in it.
Regardless of the failures of those Netflix shows, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has me intrigued. It will be hitting theaters on July 9, 2021. Don’t expect some Disney+ surprise release for this one.
