Straight out of the Takashi Miike school of colorful ultra-violence we have She’s Just a Shadow, a bright and bubbly-looking bit of pulp coming from director Adam Sherman. I’m digging the candy-coated retro vibe of the trailer and its bouncy embrace of bullets and bloodshed. Violence doesn’t always have to be grueling and painful. It can also be cathartic and fun, and this looks like a lot of fun.
In a setup like something out of Miike’s own upcoming First Love, we have a Japanese madame and her ladies, a Tokyo gangster and his crew, and a serial killer on the loose all crossing paths for what I’m sure will be a nonstop climax to what’s described as “a dreamlike backdrop of ultra-violence and orgiastic sex.” There are few phrases that immediately sell me on a movie, but that is definitely one of them.
She’s Just a Shadow will shoot to theaters and VOD on July 19, 2019.
