Romantic comedies live or die on their leads. There’s a bunch of other stuff that came make them bad, but if the leads don’t jive then the ship is sunk. Thankfully, both Simon Pegg and Lake Bell are awesome so they should be able to keep Man Up afloat.
I was initially hoping that the movie would be only the single date as that would be an interesting take on the cliche meet-cute in the beginning. It is not so that dream left about halfway through the trailer. Still, it looks like Bell and Pegg have some fun. I don’t think we’ll be getting a revolution in the genre with this one, but at least it looks like it’ll avoid most of the pitfalls normal rom-coms fall into (e.g. not being British).
