Skyfall lands in the IMAX for the biggest Bond yet

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in the IMAX was the action movie event of last year, unsurprisingly earning our Dactyl for Best Action Film. It seems as though James Bond has been taking notes from Mr. Hunt’s vertigo-inducing escapades, as Skyfall was today announced as getting its own IMAX release.

Unfortunately, while no footage is being shot specifically for the format, the press release states the movie will be ‘digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience’, which probably just means it won’t be unwatchably pixellated. It’s always a plus to have more ways to enjoy a movie, especially if it makes IMAX more viable in the long run – an infinitely superior advancement of the cinematic form than, urgh, 3D. Hopefully future Bonds will have at least a few sequences shot with the format in mind, but for now this is an encouraging development for the fifty-year old series. The IMAX version of the movie will go out simultaneously with the standard theatrical release on Nov. 9th in the US and Oct. 26th in Europe.
