Because studios love counting their chickens before they hatch, Producer Joe Roth has stated that Universal’s upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman, their Lord of the Rings-styled take on the classic fairy tale. The film will star Kristen Stewart (ugh) as Snow White, Charlize Theron as the evil queen, and Chris Hemworth as the Huntsman, which was previously announced to be played by Viggo Mortensen. It seems that going up against Relativity’s Snow White, releasing earlier in 2012, hasn’t deterred Roth’s plans for three movies before he even finds out if people like the first one.
“It’s meant to be the first in a series of films,” Roth says. “This story will end, but there will be questions remaining for these three characters.” Yeah, questions of how much money they can squeeze out of one concept!
Of course, this is nothing new for Hollywood. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has up to three more sequels in development, which is incredibly optimistic considering the last one was such a stinker. The difference is, Disney had the decency to see how the first film in that franchise did before potentially shoving stuff that audiences didn’t want down their throat. It’s just incredibly ballsy to think that audiences are up for two more Snow White films after two different movies in one year.
