When Sony announced that they would be doing an animated Spider-Man movie after giving the live-action rights to Marvel, I was a bit confused. There wasn’t any need to make an animated version of the character, especially when all eyes would be on the Spider-Man in the MCU. But when it was announced that the movie would be focused on Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of the Ultimate Universe, it all finally clicked. Miles Morales is popular, but not as popular as Peter Parker. Giving him a smaller stage to shine on is exactly what the character needs.
And hoo boy does the newest trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse check all of the right boxes for me. It’s bright and energized with some slick animation, memorable character designs, and it isn’t afraid to be weird as hell. How weird are we walking about? Spider-Ham is a prominent character in this trailer as well as Peni Parker, an Asian-American teenager with a Spider-Man mech suit, Spider-Gwen, a superhero version of Gwen Stacey, and the Spider-Man from the Noir universe where everything is black and white. And I love it.
There’s a lot of action and multiversal goings on here, but all of it just looks so damn fun in the sense that nothing is off the table. It’s like Marvel gave Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the minds behind The Lego Movie, the keys to Marvel’s multiversal and told them to have at it with a Spider-Man movie. If it turns out the main villain of the movie is the Superior Spider-Man, manipulating all of reality to be the best Spider-Man, then I’ll be as giddy as a school girl.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse releases December 14th, 2018.
