Spider-Man: Far From Home second trailer showcases a post-Endgame universe (with heavy spoilers)

Or a multiverse, rather

In a weird, unprecedented move for a film trailer, Spider-Man star and infamous leaker Tom Holland gave a spoiler warning for Avengers: Endgame right before the trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. It turned out to be quite necessary, because the trailer immediately started with how a certain bombshell in that film's ending starts off this new chapter. If you somehow haven't seen the film and have been avoiding spoilers yet kept on watching the trailer anyway, well, uh, I've got some bad news for you.

The main theme of this film appears to be one about legacy and succession, but being Spider-Man, this comes into conflict with Peter Parker's desire for a normal life with his friends. It's a bit tough though, seeing how apparently the Snap from Infinity War and Endgame opened up the entire damn multiverse and unleashed a host of elemental horrors into the world. And because no one else is available, Nick Fury, director of nothing, recruits a freaking child to help him. Peter Parker, who will likely never have a normal vacation ever again, will have to work with Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio, who doesn't seem like a suspicious figure at all, to fight off these Elementals.

Ol' fishbowl here claims to be from an alternate universe, but read any comments online and you'll see total suspicion. Mysterio in the comics, you see, is a trickster. But Spider-Man: Homecoming had its own unexpected plot twist, so who's to say that it'll be that obvious in Far From Home. Perhaps Mysterio is telling the truth about his origin, but his powers are total B.S.? Maybe he isn't from another universe (he could be a victim of the Snap, building a new identity for himself five years later), but the multiverse threat is very real. Whatever the case, we shouldn't get into the business of pre-spoiling the movie (although being right would feel very good).

This trailer explicitly mentions a multiverse, although Doctor Strange and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 (not that Marvel Studios cares about the latter) have mentioned it before. While Spider-Man rubbing elbows with the Avengers and going to freaking space, as Nick Fury points out in the trailer, shows just how far out Peter Parker has gone in the MCU, these new Spider-Man movies do have a unique function. Homecoming was interesting in showing how the events of The Avengers affected the regular people in the MCU through Michael Keaton's Vulture, a blue-collar character driven by desperation and economic anxiety after a Tony Stark-sponsored company takes his job of cleaning up the battle messes left behind. Likewise, Far From Home will explore the consequences that Infinity War and Endgame left behind on regular folk.

I would personally like to see how Peter has been affected by losing five years, with all of the unsnapped kids in his school growing up past him. Interesting how for plot convenience, all high school characters relevant to Peter also got snapped... But hey, gotta do what's best for your story, I suppose. Spider-Man: Far From Home had its release date bumped up a few days, and will be released by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios on July 2.
