After hyping things up to an absurd degree with a ticketed preview event (capitalism was a mistake), Marvel has released the second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home tonight and it confirms a few details for fans. While the more important information is what the plot actually concerns, we can finally put one assumption to bed: Willem Dafoe is 100% in the movie.
While the first teaser set up the general idea that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) would be paling around with Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to thwart some multiverse mishaps, we now have a better understanding of why these other villains are showing up in the MCU. It’s almost like karmic retribution for trying to run away from his problems that Peter now needs to face the demons of other Peter Parker’s.
As explained by Strange during the trailer, each of the villains in this film, which we now know are Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Lizard (possibly Rhys Ifans), and Sandman (possibly Thomas Haden Church), was killed by Spider-Man during a climactic battle. Holland’s Peter is attempting to change fate, which will probably not go well.
It’s certainly a much more interesting angle than assuming Strange is really Mephisto and the devil is raising the dead or something. At any rate, I’m looking forward to seeing some veteran actors take up the reins one last time. We all need more Dafoe in our lives. If Spider-Man: No Way Home can deliver that, it will be good.
