Putting aside discussions of why the Spider-Man franchise doesn’t need a reboot all that bad, let’s talk about casting. It’s a given that Toby Maguire probably won’t be returning as the main character, but what about the pivotal role of Betty Brandt? Oh, you don’t know her? The personal assistant of Daily Bugle boss J. Jonah Jameson? How could you not remember her right away?
Well, now you should care about her, because Dark Horizons reports that director Marc Webb is looking to get Zooey Deschanel to fill the role played by Elizabeth Banks in the original three films. Zooey Deschanel is adorable, plain and simple. She has one expression on-screen in every role: adorable. And I’m fine with that!
In related news, it seems that Peter Parker’s biological parents will come into play in this new film. Casting calls for a 6-9 year old version of Parker as well as his parents, who in the Marvel universe were government spies working for S.H.I.E.L.D. The parents will, naturally, show up in flashbacks. Could be interesting, though I question how much it could really change the character.
