It’s no secret or surprise that there was a lot of content from Avengers: Age of Ultron that didn’t make it off the cutting room floor and into the final movie, but according to a recent interview with Joss Whedon on the Empire Film Podcast, there were even some things that didn’t make it in before production started.
One of the final moments of the film teases an entirely new array of future Avengers with some new and returning heroes lining up for the job. If Whedon could’ve had his way, Captain Marvel and Spider-man would’ve been there too.
“…it would be great if we could just add a few more, if we could have a Captain Marvel there… And they talked about it.” starts Whedon. “I was like, ‘And Spider-Man, we could do that too, cause Sony had approached us during the first movie about a little integration.”
This may have worked out in Captain Marvel’s favor as not to steal the spotlight from her 2017 feature debut since this development predated the announcement of the upcoming project, but apparently Spider-man just barely didn’t make it back into Marvel’s hands in time to show up in Ultron.
“So I would have put both of them in, but neither of the deals were made. And then they were like, ‘We’re making a Captain Marvel movie and we’ve got Spider-Man as a property,’ and I’m like, ‘I’ve already locked my film, you fuckers! Thanks for nothing.’”
As cool as it would’ve been to have a reveal of Spider-Man at the end of Ultron, I’m actually a little glad these two didn’t make the cut. The movie was already filled with a LOT of stars and heroes and many future key players showed up over the course of the admittedly lengthy film. Any more heroes, no matter how cool, may have turned the movie into a real case of “Too Many Cooks.”
