Spoiler: Sony may kill off a Spider-Man character

Sony is shooting for two more films after The Amazing Spider-Man, and they have some big plans for the arc of this new trilogy. If the studio has its druthers, that may mean the death of a certain character.

Since there are SPOILERS involved, the rest of the story continues after the cut. If you want to avoid this info, steer clear and eat a Hostess Fruit Pie.

With Shailene Woodley now confirmed to play Mary Jane Watson, The Hollywood Reporter and The Playlist noted that Sony is building the trilogy toward “The Death of Gwen Stacy,” one of the best-known Spider-Man stories in the character’s history.

Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacy in the first film, suggested that it was going to happen a while back. The Playlist excerpted the following from their interview with the actress:

Essentially the argument is that Spider-Man kills her by accident. So the person she loves is the person who kills her, which is the most horrifying thing. Apparently people unsubscribed to the comic book when that happened because they were just so flipped-out over it. But, of course, I want to stay true to that.

Sam Raimi did a riff on “The Death of Gwen Stacy” in his first Spider-Man film, with Mary Jane in peril rather than Gwen. It’s unclear if Sony’s plans are subject to change, but this seems to be the current trajectory of the franchise.
