With SpongeBob turning 20 this year, Nickelodeon is seeing to it that their golden yellow boy doesn’t stagnate too much, announcing today a spin-off series tentatively titled “Kamp Koral.”
The series is set to be a prequel, featuring a ten-year-old SpongeBob during his stay at summer camp. Formative times, those spent at Kamp Koral! Plot details are sparse, but the news broke with the tidbit that Kamp Koral would be a “CG-animated” series, as opposed to SpongeBob SquarePants‘ traditional 2D style. Though covering a plethora of possibilities, we should expect the spin-off to look at least a little different from our regularly-scheduled doses of Bikini Bottom.
Kamp Koral is only the first of potential SpongeBob spin-offs, with Nickelodeon having mentioned ambitious plans for the Spongeverse. 2019 being a landmark anniversary for the show, Nick has dubbed it the Best Year Ever, set to include SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout, an hour-long special premiering on July 12, with more new show announcements trickling in.
This all comes ahead of next year’s It’s a Wonderful Sponge, the next theatrical SpongeBob film. It’s a Wonderful Sponge will be coming from Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies May 22, 2020.
