Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro are in talks for Grudge Match, a comedy about two retired boxers returning to the ring for a last bout. The casting is clearly supposed to spark fan debate over who would win between Stallone’s Rocky Balboa and DeNiro’s Jake LaMotta, although since Stallone is one of the buffest 65 year olds around and DeNiro barely seems energetic enough to move in his lazier recent performances, my money’s on The Italian Stallion to take this one.
Peter Segal of Anger Management will direct, and the most recent draft of the script was penned by (urgh) Entourage‘s Doug Ellin. The movie has not yet been officially greenlit, but is nevertheless expected to go before the cameras early next year. Honestly, I can’t see how this could work: it take months of constant training for DeNiro to get in anywhere near the kind of shape to look a credible opponent for Stallone, and he doesn’t look like he gets much exercise these days. Neither actor is blessed as a comedic performer either, unless you’ve taken enough Ivan Drago or Sugar Ray Robinson haymakers to the head to consider Little Fockers and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot a good time. If so, seek medical help immediately.
