If you thought Disney’s previous claims of backing off on Star Wars related media would hold true, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. During its investor call today, the house of mouse revealed that it is planning 10 new series for both its sci-fi and Marvel brands over the course of the next few years. Yup, now even Asbestos Lady has a chance at getting a series.
These series will be premiering on Disney+ sometime in the future, though I wouldn’t expect them soon. That large number of Marvel shows could also be supplemented by the projects we do know exist, such as Loki, WandaVision, and Falcon and Winter Soldier. Kevin Feige is at least interested in keeping the MCU alive for as long as possible, so why not a nice round number like 10 different shows to continuously pump out each year?
The cynic in me just feels like this will be the death knell for any success that Star Wars and Marvel have going forward. People are already complaining about how Star Wars isn’t special anymore and that they are tired of the MCU, so I can’t expect that an overabundance of new shows will help things. If anything, it could end up distracting from The Mandalorian, which itself isn’t perfect.
