Perhaps my sense of time has been thrown out of flux, but it feels like this Star Wars sequel trilogy has only just begun. Not only is it near its end, but The Rise of Skywalker will cap off the Skywalker Saga as a whole. Star Wars stans around the country endured Monday Night Football to get a taste of what J.J. Abrams will have in store. It turns out, there’s gonna be a lot of Star Wars in this Star Wars.
As advertised, this film looks more like an adventure than the other sequels. Our crew of Rey, Finn, and Poe appear to be traveling between a number of different unique locales, with one of the destinations appearing to be the remains of the second Death Star. We also get a brief look at Rose, who has unfortunately been largely absent from the marketing thus far. There’s not a lot of talking in this final trailer, but there is no shortage of action shots, with the centerpiece of the footage being a grand duel between Rey and Kylo Ren.
Fans will probably talk about how emotional they got at C-3PO, marveling at the main trio and feeling nostalgic. This is despite the fact that I don’t even thing 3PO has hung out with this crew for much time. Heck, it took until the end of The Last Jedi, the second of three movies, for the two protagonists of Rey and Poe to finally say words to each other. We’ll seen soon enough if these disparate characters even have a rapport with each other. If they can retcon some parentage details in, they can do so with friendships as well.
And then you have the money shot of the trailer, with a swarm of Resistance, Rebel, and who-knows-what-else ships all gathering together; eagle-eye Star Wars fans will spot obscure references across all franchise media. I sure hope that it’s safe for those ships to be so close to each other. Also, notice that the Millennium Falcon has its old radar dish back—I dread to think that this film will do some Avengers: Endgame time travel nonsense to act as a send-off. The Emperor is already back, so might as well throw every damn thing into it.
