The timeline of the X-Men movies is becoming increasingly convoluted, with the existence of not one, but two spin-off series from the chronology of the first three movies. 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine was originally set to be the first in a series filling in the backstories of individual mutants, but then First Class happened and made that concept redundant. Instead, the sequel to the 2009 movie is adding another story to Wolverine’s past, based on the Chris Claremont and Frank Miller comic book arc that sent the character to Japan.
The movie seemed trapped in limbo following the departure of Darren Aronofsky and shooting delays caused by the Japanese tsunami, but with James Mangold signed on as the new director, an official release date has been set for July 23rd 2013. Star Hugh Jackman will be going beserker once again after completing his work on Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Les Misérables.
