Dropping a casual mention on his Twitter account, Suicide Squad director James Gunn revealed that Sylvester Stallone has a role in the upcoming DC reboot, though what that might be remains to be seen.
Always love working with my friend @TheSlyStallone & our work today on #TheSuicideSquad was no exception. Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is. ???? pic.twitter.com/LFVBoxscKR

Stallone and Gunn previously worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, wherein the iconic action star played a supporting role as Stakar Ogord, a notorious and influential Ravager (space pirate). Stallone’s Guardians part was relatively minor in the grand scheme of the Marvel sequel, so Gunn’s nonchalant reveal of his involvement in Suicide Squad might hint at the part being of a similar heft. Though, who can complain about more Stallone.
Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has received some teases and character reveals, highlighting Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the gang’s anti-heroic antics to come, though we await a full-fledged trailer with bated (?) breath.
With Peacemaker, John Cena’s character in the new Squad, already getting an HBO spin-off series of his own, Warner Bros. and DC are clearly going all-in on Gunn’s film. A star of Stallone’s caliber tagging along in what will likely end up a minor role would indicate that no expense is being spared for the sequel (“light reboot?”).
David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad was a big hit at the box office despite being panned by critics. At that point I was… not a critic and I still panned it. Here’s hoping that Gunn’s film is an improvement, and with the Italian Stallion backing him, how could it not be?
