Taika Waititi's satire Jojo Rabbit skewers the Nazis

Going to war on hate

Taika Waititi has really taken the cinematic world by storm these past few years. What We Do in the Shadows was a breakout hit (that spawned a TV series--also a hit), followed by the Sam Neilltastic Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Then it's off to do some Thor movie for a small production company; Marvel Studios have been garnering some attention of late.

It's no secret that Waititi will be directing some of the upcoming Star Wars show The Mandalorian, and his Thor Love and Thunder is hot off the presses from San Diego Comic Con. But before all of that, he's back to a smaller, madcap production with Jojo Rabbit, based on the book (Caging Skies) by Christine Leunens.

The film centers on young Jojo "Rabbit" (Roman Griffin Davis), a little German boy growing up under the Third Reich. When he learns his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is harboring a Jewish fugitive, things become complicated in Jojo's world. Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, and Alfie Allen also star, with Waititi himself playing none other than Adolf Hitler, Jojo's imaginary friend.

It certainly looks like the best of Monty Python or Saturday Night Live, and is slightly amusing that the trailer really needs to reinforce for viewers that the film is a satire. Waititi's reflections on training to play Hitler should be proof enough that there's not an ounce of Nazi sympathy coming from this production.

Picked up to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Jojo Rabbit will release theatrically October 18, 2019.
