Very little has been said about DC’s upcoming Joker movie, which has now officially been titled Joker. The project was announced without much fanfare and so far the only things that we know about it are that Joaquin Phoenix is going to play the Clown Prince of Crime, this is what he looks like, and it may share a couple of elements with Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke, such as the Joker being a failed standup comedian before turning to crime. Besides that, we know next to nothing about Joker.
Director and Co-writer Todd Philips shared an image from the movie, stating that he’s knees deep in the editing process and that the movie is coming along smoothly. Just going off of the image, the last movie I expect a still image like this to be for would be a movie about the Joker. If anything, I’m getting a Western vibe from this frame, like it was something out of The Majestic Seven. Maybe it’s the lack of color, but this doesn’t look like something DC would make, and I’m all the happier for it. The jury’s still out on if it’ll be good, but at least this looks to be one of the most interesting movies of the year.
We’re still a couple of months out from the release, so it’s only a matter of time until a trailer drops for Joker. Will it debut alongside Shazam! and keep the DC momentum going? Will they wait until SDCC to finally drop the trailer? Or is DC just going to plop it without fanfare online and see how it does? DC has been producing some pretty solid films here, so they need to choose their next move very carefully.
Joker will release October 4, 2019.
