There’s something to be said about an old school intro to a kung-fu movie: one man showcasing his skills in front of a blank background. That’s what this teaser trailer for Once Upon a Time in Shanghai feels like. (No relation to …China.) When the action gets started, they even use some old-fashioned bursts of talcum powder to emphasize each strike.
Once Upon a Time in Shanghai brings together Justin Ng, Sammo Hung, Yuen Woo-Ping, and Wong Ching-Po. The set-up for the movie is as follows:
Ng will play a poor labourer from Shandong who moves to 1920s Shanghai with a dream of making his fortune but ends up using his powerful fists. Hung plays his kung-fu master.
As our own Alec Kubas-Meyer pointed out, there have been a lot of “Once Upon a Time…” movie titles. There are even two other movies made in the 1990s called Once Upon a Time in Shanghai, AND there’s also a forthcoming crime movie called Once Upon a Time in Shanghai that will co-star Sammo Hung and Chow Yun-Fat. They could really clear up some of the clutter if they switched to the “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night in…” naming convention.
In the gallery is the teaser poster for the film, which I spotted over at Martial Arts Movie Junkie in its proper, embiggened form.
