The 2020 Golden Globe nominees have been announced

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 77th Golden Globes this morning. Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story leads the field with six nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and acting awards for stars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Dern. It was followed by Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman with five nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director, and two nominations in Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood also scored five nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

Interestingly, Robert De Niro was not nominated for his lead performance in The Irishman, perhaps to make room for Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips’ Joker, which scored three other nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director.

On the TV side, Chernobyl, The Crown, and Unbelievable led the pack with four nominations each. The strangest nominee was Jon Favreau’s live-action Lion King remake in the Best Motion Picture (Animated) category. Hollywood Foreign Press Association throwing that shade.

I question Lulu Wang’s The Farewell being nominated under Best Motion Picture (Foreign Language). While some characters speak Mandarin, most of the film is in English. This might have been a concession to get the film recognized; the Golden Globes tend to use the Musical/Comedy category for this, though. The Foreign Language shoe-in will be Bong Joon-ho’s late-capitalism satire Parasite, which is also up for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

The full list of film and television nominations is below. The 77th Golden Globes Award ceremony takes place on January 5th. Let us know what you think about the nominations and who was snubbed in the comments.
