The Avengers won’t showcase 3D/be “obnoxious” about it

Joss Whedon has come out to defend the use of 3D in the upcoming Avengers flick. In an interview with Joblo, he said:

“There’s no, ‘Oh look, we’re going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it’s in 3D!’ And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it’s an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway.”

Which is a fair point, and I’m glad that he acknowledges one of the main complaints with 3D films, but it doesn’t mean that the film will benefit from it in any way. He went on to say:

“I’m not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies – I like to see the space I’m in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years.”

The thing that bothers me about this statement is the fact that the film won’t be shot in 3D. It’s going to be converted in post, much like Star Trek 2. If it fits his “aesthetic,” then he should be using it from the start (and perhaps he should utilize the fact that it’s in 3D). Since both Captain America and Thor were done after the fact, I imagine that Marvel has required all new films to be in 3D. He should just say that. Tell everyone that the man is bringing him down or something. Maybe tell everyone he’s doing it so he can fund the release of The Cabin in the Woods or his version of Much Ado About Nothing.

We all know that it’s about the money. There really no reason to hide it. If something does have to be in 3D, though, I’d rather it not be obnoxious. So I guess this might be kind of a win for the side of justice and good? I don’t really know.
