It’s possible that DC and Warner Bros. are just a glutton for punishment as today they announced that they’re working on a spin-off detective series for HBO Max that will focus on police in the Gotham City of Matt Reeve’s upcoming The Batman. This new show doesn’t seem to be a one-off effort either but the kickstart to a Batman-centric universe that will go across platforms. Because they did so well with that the first time…
Reeves will produce the series with Terence Winter writing. The man has the credential for a crime showing for sure since he’s worked on both The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. Both those shows took deep and often dark dives into the world of crime and it seems like this series will as well, focussing in on corruption in the city and how police work in a world with vigilantes.
Here’s a nice quote from HBO Max that just screams “We’re building another universe!”: “[The show is] set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”
The worrisome thing is that DC seems to be stretching itself awfully thin now and without any real guidance posts. The DCEU is still struggling to get out of its Justice League crash course. Meanwhile, the successful Arrowverse is still chugging along but with HBO Max, DC Unlimited, and CW streaming services dividing up all their content (not to mention contracts with Netflix) it’s all pretty confusing as to what goes where. Maybe DC is just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks but that’s how they got themselves into this mess in the first place. Plan your universe, then make the shows.
