You gotta hand it to James Wan and the other producers behind The Conjuring, they took a moderately successful horror film and turned it into a franchise that could easily last an eternity. As long as the Warrens keep on adding creepy things to their creepy thing room they’ll be able to do spin-off movies, and the next one is The Nun, which now has a trailer.
Much like Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation this spin-off tells the origin story of the demon the Warrens battled in The Conjuring 2. Valak, who is just an all-around evil demon jerk, is tormenting an abbey in Romania so the church dispatches a priest with a haunted past to investigate. Horror ensues as The Hallow director Corin Hardy directs off a screenplay by IT and Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman.
It’s easy to roll your eyes at endless horror sequels, but in general, The Conjuring films have been pretty solid and surprisingly varied in their approaches. It’ll be interesting to see what tact this one takes. The director has already commented that he’s going for a classic horror vibe along the lines of Hammer horror movies.
And before you ask, no, I don’t know why it tells you to watch until the end. Maybe they thin that jump scare is something special?
The Nun will release nationwide in theaters on September 7, 2018.
