With the Disney+ service launching in Europe in a few weeks, Disney was preparing a launch event in London to celebrate its dominance of the digital marketplace. Due to growing concerns over the coronavirus, that event has been canceled.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney was planning to hold a public event this Thursday and some press conferences/panels on Friday, but that will no longer be going forward. A spokesperson told the publication, “Due to a number of media attendee cancellations and increasing concerns at the prospect of traveling internationally at this time, we have decided to cancel our Disney+ launch events scheduled to take place on Thursday and Friday.”
Journalists based in the UK will still have access to a special Disney+ lounge, but the company is looking into “alternative means” for this event. One such alternative is an executive press briefing that will be broadcast over webcams. Disney is also looking at getting key talent available in a similar capacity.
This cancellation may be a bit of a bummer, but the important thing is that everyone will be safe. Considering the wonders of internet technology, it’s not like checking out Disney+ is something you need to do in person. You can watch films on your toilet if you want. That seems like a better way to promote the service with this epidemic happening.
