By Another year, another awards season. By now, local critics groups are giving out their awards, but the big fish here is the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA). There’s a bit of overlap with the nominations that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced for the Golden Globe Awards, but this time around, The Favourite and Black Panther are leading the pack.
The historical drama-comedy and the Marvel superhero film have 14 and 12 nominations, respectively. Compared to the Academy Awards, the Critics Choice Movie Awards are a bit more robust with their categories. Unlike the Oscars, these awards pay special attention to individual genres, such as action, comedy, and sci-fi/horror. The Academy toyed with the idea of a catch-all “Popular Film” award, but it didn’t quite stick at the time.
Because of this, you’ll see films like A Quiet Place, Hereditary, Halloween, Deadpool 2, and some of my favorites like Sorry to Bother You and Crazy Rich Asians amongst the usual A Star is Born, Vice, Green Book, BlacKkKlansman, and the like. And like the Oscars but unlike the Golden Globes, various awards are handed out for crafting and technical achievements—while you can see The Favourite dominating those categories (as period pieces do), the sci-fi Afro-futurist aesthetic of Black Panther is rightfully giving it a run for its money.
It also certainly helps that there is a larger number of nominees for many of the categories rather than the usual five from other ceremonies—along with the ten Best Picture nominees, which include Roma, Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, and Mary Poppins Returns, you’ll find up to seven people in each of the acting categories. Personally, I’m really glad to see a category for young actors, as I was very impressed with Sunny Suljic’s work in Mid90s.
More so than the Golden Globe nominations, this list is inspiring me a bit more to see some of the films that I’ve missed out. I always love a good prestige movie marathon before the Oscars.
