Hey! James Gunn is back as director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3!
Oh, you already knew that?
Did you remember that he also is producing a dark superhero movie called Brightburn? Well, if for any reason you had forgotten here’s a marketing info dump!
Brightburn is produced by James Gunn and it actually was written by his brother, Brian Gunn, and cousin, Mark Gunn, with James helping develop the story. This is a dark take on the Superman mythos where this Superman may want to use his powers for something besides truth and justice. The trailer sets this up with nods to Superman: The Movie and Man of Steel. It may even use the same font for the trailer credits that the latter had. James Gunn has had a past with darker superhero movies. His movie Super was dark, but this seems to be slithering straight into the horror camp.
See what I did there? Because James directed Slither, which is a campy horror movie. I’ll just move on then.
This latest poster and trailer are riding the coattails of James Gunn’s reemergence into the public eye. This movie wasn’t being buried, but it did seem to have a subdued presence in the wake of James Gunn’s initial firing. Now that he’s been reinstated as director for the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie we’ve gone full steam ahead with the promotion machine. Toot Toot! James Gunn has taken a super active role in promoting this movie, which you could chalk up to familiar bonds or he may just be proud of the film he helped shape. That seems to be for the best as this looks to be a creepy and fascinating look at a dark Superman figure that should have enough of the Gunn family touch to stand apart from the generic.
