Disney has gone from trickling out information regarding its Little Mermaid live-action remake to outright pouring it from a bucket. In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it seems Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton in the latest reimagining of a Disney animated classic. Bardem rose to prominence after his turn in 2007’s No Country for Old Men and was even more recently cast as the villain in 2012’s Skyfall. It’ll be odd seeing him as a good guy, but them’s the breaks.
Bardem joins Halle Bailey and Harry Styles along with possibly Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay as the protagonists of this story. It’s certainly a star-studded cast, which may or may not be a good thing. As for other information regarding the remake, Rob Marshall will be directing and original composer Alan Menken will be returning to score this new version. Menken will be working alongside lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda to update old songs and add new ones. Marc Platt is set to executive produce while Marshall and John DeLuca will be producers.
