By Fox’s The New Mutants has had a troubled life, to say the least. It’s been in development a long time. The first trailer dropped in 2017 and the movie had a 2018 release date. Then the film was delayed. Then Fox was bought by Disney. There were reshoots and new cuts. In the end, it seems that the reshoots were not even used. All this brings us to today, when a new trailer has dropped in advance of the films April 2020 release.
The trailer itself indicates that The New Mutants will be a straight-up horror film. Some children experience unexplainable things, such as surviving something that would normally kill a human. The children are subsequently locked in a creepy hospital and a doctor with nefarious motives performs experiments on them. A voice indicates that the children’s fears are becoming reality. It’s pretty standard horror movie stuff. But, it might be fun to see a horror movie where the protagonists are basically superheroes. Let’s hope it is.
All in all, I don’t know that I’m personally interested in this film. The interest I have has more to do with it being the final film in the Fox X-Men universe (unless Deadpool 3 is part of it). I’m much more interested to see what Kevin Feige will do to introduce the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the years to come.
The New Mutants will release in theaters on April 3rd, 2020.
