The Scripter Supreme returns for Doctor Strange 2

Last month, it was confirmed that Scott Derrickson would be returning to direct Doctor Strange 2, and now the original’s writer is back as well. C. Robert Cargill is confirmed for the next go-round, rejoining Derrickson and the Benedicts Cumberbatch and Wong. The return shouldn’t come as a surprise to Marvel fans, and even before the sequel was officially announced, Cargill had some thoughts on where the story will go next:

Nightmare will be the villain. Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it. For those of you who have ever read the comics, you know that Baron Mordo has a very particular arc, and that’s something we discussed with Chiwetel [Ejiofor] while working on the first movie. And part of the reason Chiwetel wanted to play Mordo was because he has a definitive ending as a character and it’s such a fascinating ending. And I do know that whether we’re attached or not, that Marvel plans on working towards that ending and fully realizing Mordo as more than just a cardboard cutout villain, but actually taking him to kind of Loki levels of awesomeness. That’s the goal with him.”

Nightmare is the ruler of the Dream Dimension and one of Strange’s worst nemeses, while Baron Mordo was last seen in the post-credits of Doctor Strange stealing magic and turning heel. Based on Cargill’s quote above, there may be plans to tag-team Nightmare and Mordo against the Sorcerer Supreme for the Inter-Astral Plane Championship.

Production is set to begin in 2020, with a release slated for sometime in 2021.
