Hey, you wanna see some cool space explosions? Have you been long-awaiting Brie Larson to become a big blockbuster star? Wondering who’s gonna mess up Thanos? Wanna see Larson beat up an old lady? The second trailer for Captain Marvel has all of that, and more.
The Skrulls are making their MCU entrance in this film, and we get some closer looks at what they look like, in both their natural, green form and in disguise as humans (see: Ben Mendelsohn’s S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and that old lady). Younger, 1990s, two-eyed Nick Fury, as played by Samuel L. Jackson, seems to be acting as the road trip buddy of Carol Danvers (Larson), a human infused with Kree DNA and has no memory of her previous life on Earth.
These trailers so far seem much more fixated on action and character drama; besides the Blockbuster establishing shot from the first trailer, the promotional material thus far isn’t depending on 90s nostalgia too much. No period rock, like the trailers for Thor: Ragnarok or Guardians of the Galaxy to give the movie a fun, relatable vibe. This is gonna be a serious-ass movie, that also happens to have an adorable cat.
And… I’m into that. If they went with the rock music again, it would be turning the use of that into a gimmick and tired formula. Instead, I’m fascinated by the imagery presented by the trailer in telling the story of Carol Danvers at various points in her life. I’ve only seen one film from Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Half-Nelson starring Ryan Gosling, and I’m interested if the duo was able to add some of their more intimate character moments in an epic, space war action movie.
We’ll find out when Captain Marvel comes out in theaters on March 8, 2019. Check out the awesome poster, which is unusually not crowded with every damn cast member, below.
