This year’s The Woman in Black was just what Hammer Films needed, and it helped the studio return to form by presenting a suitably eerie and subtle ghost story that happened to star Harry Potter. It was just the success Hammer needed, and to strike the proverbial iron, a sequel was greenlit pretty much immediately. Now we have the first poster for the sequel, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, and it is…a little generic. Disappointing even.
The sequel takes place 40 years after the original, when the spooky Eel Marsh house is turned into a sanctuary for a group of evacuated children who have been displaced by the second world war. Nowadays it seems like there is some equation that studios follow where ‘x’ number of children equals ‘y’ number of scares, and frankly I’m getting kind of burned out on it. Hopefully Hammer Films can recapture what made the first such a success without hamming it up too much, especially now that they’re down a big movie star who is immediately recognizable for 99% of the world’s population. For the time being, I guess we’re just going to have to cross our fingers.
