Have you ever wanted to live in Minis Tirith from Lord of the Rings? A city glistening white, carved from a mountain, its great citadel high above the main gate overlooking the fallen capital Osgiliath and the windswept Pelennor Fields? To be a man or woman of Gondor at the Tower of Watch, the City of Kings, wandering its seven levels and passing its many gates?
No? Well, regardless, you might be able to.
An Indiegogo campaign was recently launched by a bunch of Tolkien fans to create a life-sized Minis Tirith. The gigantic city would follow the layout depicted in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films (most notably The Return of the King). Minis Tirith would feature both residential space and commercial space, allowing you to furnish your Middle Earth dwelling at the third-tier of the city with items from the IKEA at the fifth-tier of the city. Then off to Applebee’s on tier-one before a stroll to the Build-a-Beorn Workshop to construct an adorable skin-changer of your own. Just like Tolkien envisioned.
In order to build Minis Tirith, the campaign hopes to hit £1.85 billion in 60 days. That’s $2.9 billion. For perspective, that’s the cost of building eight Boeing 747s. (That’s not even taking into account the environmental impact of building a giant city into the side of a large friggin’ mountain.)
At this price tag, you could also make potato salad 290 million times.
Oh, crowdfunding. What can’t you do?
While it doesn’t look like they’ll hit their funding goal (they’ve just crossed £58,000 in 13 days), you can visit the Minas Tirith Indiegogo campaign here.
