There’s going to be an awful lot of Superman in the upcoming Arrowverse special Crisis on Infinite Earths. Not content to bring back just Brandon Routh to the project, Entertainment Weekly has learned that The CW has also tapped Smallville star Tom Welling to reprise his role as Clark Kent for the mini-series. That marks a grand total of three different Supermen.
The choice to bring Welling back was a simple one according to executive producer Marc Guggenheim. In a statement to the press, the man said, “For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it. So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”
Details about what Welling will do in the special still aren’t clear, but this crossover event is starting to sound like some real “DO NOT MISS” television. I don’t necessarily have that much interest in Arrow, but Smallville was pretty monumental when it originally aired. It showed that superhero shows don’t need to result to the same old crap to craft interesting storylines around iconic characters. Welling may not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking Superman, but a generation of kids grew up seeing him as the “Man of Steel.” This should be a real treat for them.
