Joining the ranks of past hits for the streaming titan, Netflix will move forward with animated series adaptations of Tomb Raider and Kong: Skull Island, further fleshing out their respective properties.
Set to feature in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse continuity, Skull Island picks up the story from the 2017 film, with hapless shipwrecks washing up on the monster-infested beaches of the scary skerry. Underwater writer Brian Duffield is set to write and executive produce the series, which is being developed by Powerhouse Animation, the studio behind Netflix’s hit Castlevania series.
Those chomping at the bit for more MonsterVerse right now can check out the new trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong, which will hit select theaters and HBO Max in March.
As well, an animated adaptation of the iconic Tomb Raider franchise is underway, picking up where the recent trilogy of Square Enix titles left off. Tasha Huo, who is also working on Netflix’s spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin, is writing and executive producing the series with dj2 Entertainment.
Elsewhere in the world of tomb-raiding, Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green has signed on to direct the live action sequel starring Alicia Vikander, taking over from Ben Wheatley.
Having hit it big with original series and the distribution of international productions, Netflix is increasingly becoming home to some quality animation, and it’s a great thing to behold. With hits under their belt and more on the way, it seems to have a little something for everyone. Stay tuned for further updates.
