By For all the big superhero action we’ve seen so far out of The Avengers, I think this is my favorite clip so far. It’s got Robert Downey Jr and Tom Hiddleston trading barbs, RDJ clearly relishing all the Whedonesque barbs, and I think it sets the tone for this movie and for the threat Loki’s proving pretty well. It’s all in that last line, for me, one we’ve heard in the trailers before: “If we can’t defend the Earth, you can be damn sure we’ll avenge it.” It’s a little, “Hey, that’s almost the title of the movie!,” but it also shows the desperate lengths Stark’s willing to go not just to save the world, but to ensure Loki’s defeat, no matter the cost.
Maybe I’m reading a little too much into this. Either way, this is a pretty awesome clip. Xander’s going to have a review of The Avengers up later this month, as those lucky Brits get The Avengers on April 26th. Can’t believe we bailed those tea-swillers out back in Dubya Dubya Eye Eye.
