Approved for Adoption is the animated memoir of artist and director Jung Henin, one of the many children who was adopted out of Korea immediately following the Korean war. The movie is almost entirely hand-animated, though peppered with actual super-8 family footage from Henin’s childhood.
As someone who actually has several adopted family members (including from Korea), the quote in the trailer, “For my siblings, I was one of them … For me it wasn’t always that simple” rings perfectly poignant and true. Approved for Adoption will release in US theaters on November 1st, 2013.
