Through a series of avenues and alleyways, we have the official UK trailer for the upcoming Studio Ghibli film, Arrietty. The film, an adaptation of The Borrowers by Mary Norton, is about a race of tiny people living secretly amongst the humans. One such Borrower, Arrietty, breaks the rules as she’s caught and sparks a friendship with a human.
Arrietty will be long-time Ghibli animator’s Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s directorial debut with Hayao Mayazaki as a “developing planner.” Yonebayashi has done animation for the majority of Ghibli’s releases, as well as a personal favorite anime of mine, Serial Experiments Lain.
It should again be noted that this trailer is for the UK release which has a voice cast led by Saoirse Ronan. The US dub will have Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, and Carol Burnett. Arrietty will hit our brothers across the pond on July 29th (Xander, that’s all you!), while the rest of us in the States will have to wait until February 17, 2012. For those of you who can’t wait, there was a 1997 live-action adaptation of the book that starred John Goodman. However, I can’t promise it’ll be as good as this.
