Blancanieves is Spain’s official Oscar entry this year. It’s a retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves transplanted to 1920s Seville. Rather than make Snow White a mere damsel in distress, writer/director Pablo Berger has made her a matador. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Once upon a time there was a little girl who had never known her mother. She learned the art of her father, a famous bullfighter, but was hated by her evil stepmother. One day she ran away with a troupe of dwarves, and became a legend.
The imagery in this trailer looks really striking, and reminiscent in some ways of The Artist. I’m looking forward to checking this one out. Blancanieves will arrive in New York and Los Angeles on January 25th. Look for our review of the film around that time.
