I’ve been a huge fan of roller derby ever since my brother took me and my mom to our first bout back in 2008. Ever since, I’ve been hooked, spreading derby fever to all of my friends and family, even getting Jenika Katz to try out for Los Angeles’ league. As a huge supporter of roller derby, I’ve often thought about making my own documentary about the greatest sport in the world. But it looks like the creative minds behind Derby Baby have already made the doc of my dreams. Watching the trailer, it seems that the movie will cover every concern I have for the future of derby, including mainstream acceptance, and balancing the DIY ethic with corporate sponsorship.
If you have any interest in derby, turn off that god awful Whip It piece of crap, go to the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) website, and look up your local league. Gals, you are always welcome to try out at your local league, and you don’t have to be the greatest skater either. Guys, even though you can’t compete in the bouts, there’s still loads of things you can do, be it helping setting up, tearing down, or even taking pictures or being a referee. I guarantee that no matter which league you become a part of, you’ll find one of the coolest, most supportive groups of people ever.
