With a striking blend of cyberpunk and a sort of primal horror to its photography, Eddie Alcazar’s Perfect looks like the kind of film that can seep straight into your subconscious. Produced by Stephen Soderbergh and scored by Flying Lotus, the film follows a young man as he’s sent to a retreat by his mother meant to make him perfect–but that sort of stuff never works out, and soon he’s wracked by horrific visions and his body pays the ultimate price.
I love the blend of untamed nature, sanitized modernity, cartoonish animation, and a sort of slick and sexualized horror all melded together here. The story seems loose and eerie more than methodically structured, which should lend itself to the kaleidoscope of images that Alcazar looks to be aiming for.
This is definitely on my radar, and I’m intrigued to see all that these visuals have to offer.
Perfect will hit theaters in New York on May 17, then Los Angeles on May 24, and will finally reach the masses on VOD (through a platform called Breaker) on June 21.
