What do you get when you cross a live-action version of a kid’s cartoon show with an indie romance/thriller? You get Hey Arnold!: The Movie. From the creators of Doug: The Movie comes another parody (or spoof? Lampoon? I don’t know) of the beloved “90’s kid” Nickelodeon cartoon, Hey Arnold!
Some of my colleagues are probably looking too far into these productions, but I just take them for what they are: Hilarious Fanart. That’s really what it is when you get right down to it. And it’s hilarious. It takes all the great tropes from that show and really does a great job of capitalizing on them for this proposed “story.” I know it’s not meant to be taken seriously, but I kind of appreciate this kind of fan reproduction. Being a 90’s kid is popular these days, as a lot of us 20-somethings grew up around that time, so it’s definitely dug itself a nice little niche with these fake trailers.
That being said, I’m still hoping for a Rugrats: The Movie. I can imagine them taking the imaginative show and turning the babies into mushroom-popping adult junkies who go on a drug-fueled trip akin to that of Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. Here’s hoping.
